Set in a small, industrial town in Illinois in 1968, the lives of five people intertwine on one fateful spring day. Under the low-lying dark cloud of the Vietnam war, these five people act out their personal dramas within a milieu of sadness, regret, guilt, envy, cowardice and bitterness: Ray Jackson, isolated and strong in the face of losing his business and wife;

Johnny Fitzpatrick, who has decided to run off to Canada to avoid the draft; Jimmy Smith, who overcomes physical and mental limitations and willing to believe the best about people; Nancy Smith, who has devoted her entire life to raising her only child in the face of great odds; and Earl Jansen who carries the guilt of an accidental shooting two years earlier that forced him off the police force.

However there is also in equal measure all-consuming love, courage, loyalty, kindness, mercy, gentleness and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Linked together in conflict, articulate friendship and understanding, their plight as human beings is one we all share.

An NSA employee with access to government surveillance is a dangerous thing. Rafe has an obsession with a young San Francisco woman. As the novel opens, he appears in Cat’s apartment and holds a gun on her, but try as she might, she doesn’t remember him because she knew him only in blackout. With the help of a pencil, she is able to escape. On the loose, Cat finds herself in a desperate situation. The police don’t believe her, since she’s a recovering alcoholic who has given them headaches in the past. Her old friends will no longer help her. Her AA sponsor lets her down. When she stays with an acquaintance, that woman turns up dead. Her cell phone becomes a problem, as well. Thus begins a breathless chase across the country and off the grid.

This novel is about more than just a chase, though. Rafe is an NSA employee who is authorized to conduct surveillance on whomever he wants at his own discretion and without oversight, as chillingly described by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. This novel is about the danger of allowing certain people omniscient power in the name of fighting terrorism. It’s about the innocent victims. It’s about her relationship with a young man she happens to meet who has no idea the trouble he’s in for. It’s about love in a time of hiding.

Fifteen-year-old Therese watches her parents die. While in a coma, she meets the twin sons of Hades—Hypnos (the god of sleep) and Thanatos (the god of death). She thinks she’s manipulating a dream, not kissing the god of death and totally rocking his world. Than makes a deal with Hades and goes as a mortal to the Upperworld to try and win Therese’s heart, but not all the gods are happy. Some give her gifts. Others try to kill her. The deal requires Therese to avenge the death of her parents. With the help of Than’s fierce and exotic sisters, the Furies, she finds herself in an arena face to face with the murderer, and only one will survive.
