“No one writes history like William S. Shepard. His ability to turn “Nothing but facts” into a “What happened next” is his genius….It’s a WINNER.” -Charlotte C.

A recently read notebook from the Western Front in 1918 forms the basis for the first third of this ebook, “Over There: A Doughboy in France, 1918.” See what it was like to be on the front line on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918.

Maryland In The Civil War,” the second portion, traces the bravery of Governor Hicks, who kept Maryland, a critically important border state, from joining the South as the Civil War began. Then the bravery of Marylanders on both sides was tragically tested at Antietam, Gettysburg, and other battlefields.

My interest in American military history began when I read that an ancestor had fought in a seventeenth century colonial war that I had never heard of – King Philip’s War, a conflict that nearly wiped out English settlements in New England. When western Massachusetts was the frontier, in 1675-1676, settlers fought for their lives. That interest led naturally to further exploration of regional conflicts, including the French and Indian War (1754-1760), where a very young provincial colonel named George Washington first made his reputation, nearly losing his life in the process.

A young nation made many errors in the War of 1812 (1812-1815), although the conflict ended with both Canada and the United States as strengthened nations. Some young officers made their early reputations then, coming to prominence in the Mexican War (1846-1848). while the Spanish-American War (1898) heralded our coming to age as a potential world power. These five conflicts comprise “America’s Unknown Wars,” which concludes the volume. Each has its fascination – as do the lesser conflicts, important in their day – such as King William’s War at the end of the 17th century – which paved the way for our national identity.

Whether staving off a winter Indian attack at Deerfield in 1703, fighting at Antietam in 1862, or manning a lonely Signal Corps post on a Western Front hilltop in 1918, these stories are about American military heroes. They contain the richness of our national heritage. Thank you for letting me share them with you.

Growing up in a mentally abusive household was never fun, but then I married a Walter Mitty character who took me to Africa and into some ridiculous and dangerous situations!

To survive, I worked 24/7.

I taught children, ran the worst riding school in the world, bred pet animals, announced on radio, lived on a boat and brought up two children of my own. On the lighter side, I hosted a royal occasion, met heads of state, interviewed Nelson Mandela and shook hands with Prince Charles.

Much to my amazement I ‘fell’ into the media, first writing for radio and television, then directing, and eventually I ran my own video production company and won several awards.

However, throughout all this, my mother lurked in the background, always there to remind me what a failure I was.

The only thing that saved me from admittance to the nearest mental home was an unfailing sense of humour.
