It was ten at night. I had just come off I-65, and my high beams lit her up from behind. She was walking along the road between dark, endless cornfields, and her right leg was in a cast. She wore denim shorts and a yellow tank top that didn’t quite reach the shorts. Without crutches, she moved as fast as she could on the gravelly shoulder. She would take a long step with her good leg, stiffly swing the cast forward the same distance, and immediately start the next step. Tilting jerkily, she looked as if she would fall with every stride. I crossed the centerline to give her more room to fall. Just as I was about to pass her, she glanced over her shoulder and stuck out a thumb.

When Phil Larrison, editor of a small-town newspaper in southern Indiana, picks up the hitchhiker, this chance encounter plunges him into a deadly mystery that he struggles to solve because he wants a big story for the paper. But the story turns out to be much bigger than he expects—and far more painful.

This book is written with a tender humor and a genuine compassion for the importance of the feelings and emotions of a child.

This little book is like iced tea on a hot day. It changes things inside of you.
Joyce Faulkner, Author of “In the Shadow of Suribachi,” “Losing Patience,” “For Shrieking Out Loud,” and “USERNAME.”

There is so much love echoing through these stories — love of family and love of nature — they are a joy to read.
Barbara Alfaro author of “Mirror Talk”

This is a book you will want to read again and again, particularly aloud to those who are important in your life.
Inge Meldgaard author of “A death in the Making” and “The Cicada”

R. Garcia, the writer who is also known by his pen name “Phantomimic,” brings you “The Sun Zebra”, which is best described as a children’s book for grownups. Its aim is to encourage us to discover (or rediscover) the amazing things that children and their magical carefree world can teach us, even as we try to teach them about the harsh realities of our own. The book is a collection of five stories that follow the “adventures in living” of an unusual little girl named Nell, her mother Rhonda, and Nell’s father who is the narrator of the stories.

But what about the storyteller?
Was he a figment of the imagination?
Or was he just as real as the story he told, and the beer he shared with his captive audience that hot afternoon?

New writers often worry more about how to sell their book instead of writing a polished story in the first place. They have the pedal pressed to the floor when they shouldn’t have gotten in the ride at all, so to speak. In “Slow Your Prose: 25 Tips On How New Authors Can Improve Their Craft,” we go back to the basics.

Showing vs. telling, passive/active voice, point-of-views … many writers confuse these key elements for writing a good story. Before rushing a book to market, it’s more important to write the best book possible first. But why do so many authors skip this step?

As a bonus, you’ll find three proven query letters that have led to deals with a literary agent, a magazine and popular anthology by a New York Times best-selling author.

A cursed painting…
A hidden affair…
And an undying secret, alive, in canvas and oil.

For art professor Dan Rineheart, life’s a dream. His children’s laughter fills the halls of his home, and his wife’s embrace lulls him to sleep.

But this summer’s end heralds the arrival of three ill omens: a lost bird, thousands of miles from home; a beautiful student with whom he shares an insidious past…

…and a mysterious painting, a disturbing work of grotesque perfection that awakens a surreal nightmare.

Enter the world of FORSAKEN, where evil lives in art.

Where abstract children emerge from painted worlds to stalk the quiet halls of a happy home.

Where drawn clocks tick-tock away in the dark hours before dawn, and a missing dog whimpers from between the walls.

And where all answers lead to a blind artist and an impossible creation, a cursed canvas with a dark past that threatens to destroy his family and devour his sanity, unless he can solve the riddle that came with it: “Here in Art, Denial.”
