Esther feels like her family of four has become a family of three with a live-in social work project. She is never more aware of her failure to fit in than at her eighteenth birthday party, when the guest of honour becomes the odd one out. One impulsive act of rebellion will change everything – whether or not Esther is ready to deal with the consequences.

Cheryl lives a drama-free life – and its killing her. Motherhood has been a disappointment and the days are melting into one another, one endless blur of nothingness, funded by welfare payments and a small town that seems to be shrinking in on her. Escaping the monotony is becoming a matter of life or death.

Carla is beautiful and wealthy, and ambitious to the core. She’s new in town to find a fresh start, and it doesn’t take much effort to line up a suitable job, then partner and home. The question for Carla is, can a promising future cancel out a shadowed past?

Their lives couldn’t be more different – but Esther, Cheryl and Carla will all discover that finding peace will come at a cost…someone might have to die.

Zombie/Apocalypse 2012

A Political Horror Story is a zombie tale with a political background story- not from a left or right minded perspective, but from that of an average American who feels left behind by the system. It is the tale of a regular guy- an unemployed factory worker- in the first days of the end of the world, a time in which the ways of doing things have become muddled between pre and post apocalypse. It may not be too late to save humanity, but any progress that is made gets sidetracked by the failings of the media and politicians, religious fanatics, left-wing zealots, right-wing zealots, political correctness, and bureaucracy. Will divisiveness and the failed policies of our past doom us in the future? Yes, but at least there will be some laughs along the way.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the horror genre and the zombie sub-genre in particular. However, one thing always bothered me about zombie films. I believed that if such events were to take place, government agencies would step in and contain the situation before it reached apocalyptic proportions. After paying a little closer attention to politics in recent years, I now wonder how my garbage gets collected every week. The idea for this story occured to me as I watched a congressman argue that cuts needed to be made in some program (Social Security or N.P.R. or something along those lines) in order to fund aid to a community that had been devastated by a natural disaster. I wondered what he would do if the dead began to rise. I set out to write a short story with this idea in my head (I’ve written quite a few, and may publish a collection of them next) but just couldn’t ever seem to stop writing.

When ‘An Arm And A Leg’ was published by Crimespree Magazine in January 2010, we were to witness Nigel Bird’s debut as a crime-writer. Soon afterwards, the story was chosen by Maxim Jakubowski for the Mammoth Best British Crime Stories 8.

Since then, Bird has been the winner of the Watery Grave Invitational competition, won the Things I’d Rather Be Doing fairytale crime competition and been nominated for the Best Story Online in the Spinetingler awards for 2011.

‘With Love And Squalor’ is his 3rd collection of stories. In it, we see the range of his talents, a spread of individual pieces which combine to provide readers with a powerful and emotional experience that they aren’t likely to forget in a hurry.
