A young woman finds her loyalties tested beyond limit and her desires torn beyond measure in 1846 California.

After sailing around Cape Horn, and barely surviving the perilous journey, devout Protestant Rachel Tyler, arrives in California just in time for her father’s wedding and the unfolding of the Bear Flag Revolt. Though already engaged to marry a minister in Massachusetts, Rachel’s ambitious father arranges her betrothal to Roman Vasquez, a blue-blooded Catholic son of the gente de razón, the ruling class of California.

Roman, a proud, Spanish soldier is ready to fight and die for his homeland. As the Yankee rebels raise their bear flag in Sonoma square, the last thing Roman wants is an arranged marriage to the American daughter of his enemy Joshua Tyler. But his Uncle Pedro, the Patrón of the family, has other plans.

Neither Rachel nor Roman desire this unlikely engagement that assaults their religious beliefs, but they cannot escape the passion flaming between them as war looms on the horizon and bitter rivals rise up to destroy them amid the breathtaking backdrop of the last days of the Californios.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

I loved this book and didn’t want to put it down! I enjoy reading historical novels that are set in different historical eras and this one captures California history and the changing lifestyle so vividly, that I was drawn into that world. There is darkness – true evil – portrayed, but the reliance on Jesus and His supremacy over evil was woven throughout.

An excellent book. The writing was good, the character development was good, the plot was good, but the use of good vs. evil was astounding. As I continued to read what stood out more was the depth of good that was portrayed and not just on the surface level, but the deep soul searching, unfathomable grace that is available to us all that was revealed in the pages of this story. Great job!

Such a beautiful and gripping tale! Paula Scott knows how to weave a deep and powerful story fraught with rich and stirring messages of faith and coming to Christ. Lots of passion–both in romance (clean) and in the characters beliefs of God and the Bible. Looking forward to the next in the series. These books are not to be missed!

This was a truly fascinating story with depth of characters and uncompromising portrayals of the struggle between the spiritually dead and those alive in Christ. Some might say it was edgy at times, but I felt the realistic picture of a dark world made the light of Christ and the Christ following characters shine brighter. Although it had good closure and probably ended at the right place, I didn’t want it to be the end. Thanks for a standout read in a market of read-a likes.

The depth of the characters are so raw and real. If I closed my eyes, I was right there with them and their wresting with emotions and reality; with darkness and light; with life in Jesus and life without; with pain, sorrow and joy. Paula writes with knowledge of her time period and a deep knowledge of life – both the good and the evil.
