This is the critically acclaimed and emotionally charged story of JP McGrath, a young cowboy who at sixteen finds himself working on the Tobin Ranch east of El Paso. JP has been forced to grow up fast, life has been hard, but his biggest test is yet to come. On a night out drinking with friends, a chain of events is set in motion as violent as it is unstoppable.

Already, JP has been hailed as having entered the ranks of the most interesting, sympathetic and poignant characters to populate the lonesome, literary West. This beautifully designed series of stories, of which this is the first, is fast becoming one of the most anticipated western collections of recent years.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Though the story is very strong and carries a tremendous impact in its brevity, it is the prose that flows so comfortably from Lalui’s pen that makes it magical… Writing like this doesn’t come around often, and when it does, it demands our close attention. Ardin Lalui appears to have a very solid future.

Although I don’t usually read this genre, I was drawn in from the first paragraph. Everything from the imagery, to the sense of place, to the pacing of the story is well done. I could feel the foreboding in the atmosphere, and cared about the characters and what happened to them. Highly recommend!

I loved this story. I was drawn in by the characters from the very first page and I could not turn the pages quickly enough. I just want to take these young men home and feed them up and give them the kind of home life they missed out on. Wonderful writing, such believable characters, sad and yet so full of possibilities at the end.

Great read. I liked the writing style. Very Cormac McCarthy! From the opening quote taken from Cities of the Plain, I was hooked.

Haunting in its sorrow and filled with humor, this is a remarkable debut from one of the country’s most exciting new writers.
