What happens when a successful, determined middle-aged man falls in love with a woman who has been happily married for twenty-seven years? If he’s Avery Laird, he hires her to work for him.

Buddy Middleton is positive that the job his wife, Ginger, is offered is too good to be true, that Avery Laird has an ulterior motive, but he can’t prove it. When Buddy voices his doubts and urges her not to take it, he makes Ginger feel as though she isn’t worth the offer. Determined to prove him wrong, Ginger goes to work for Laird and saves him over half a million dollars in the first real estate deal she handles for his company.

Flush with success, Ginger believes that the problems she and Buddy had are over. But then they have an unexpected guest from the past, a fellow named Hoot with whom Buddy played professional baseball when they were newly married. Hoot tells Ginger the true reason Buddy quit baseball, a subject they had always avoided. When Ginger confronts Buddy with what she has learned, trouble really begins… and Avery is there waiting.

This is a novel about marriage, about what can happen when you’ve made your adjustments to each other and you think your lives are just about perfect.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

I give a 5 star rating to stories that I can’t wait to get back to and hate to finish! This is one of them. Too many couples don’t realize how much their marital problems affect the whole family. This story shows that in many ways. I love marriage and family stories and this did not disappoint.

For anyone that has ended a long term marriage or thinking about it will enjoy the good read. How much a wife can give to save a unhappy marriage. Makes you stop and think of your own relationship.

Book was well written. The charming story stimulated one to access their own marriage and see what if any changes need to be made. All married couples may benefit from reading this book.

This book was great. Very down to earth on things that really happen in today’s world. The way the author writes it while you are reading it you feel like you are part of what is going on. You will enjoy this book!!!

I loved this book! I didn’t realize until I finished that it was the same author who wrote The Writers Conference, another fine novel. I enjoyed this book because the characters were older and in a long term marriage. It seems like a great marriage until you get into the book more.

About The Author

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t reading. Books were my escape from the legendary Buffalo, New York winters and probably contributed to my becoming a writer. Now I live in Central Virginia near the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a trade: hot, humid summers for harsh winters. I handle the hottest days as I would a blizzard. I stay inside and read. In the Giffort Street stories, collected in “Harry Danced Divinely,” I re-created the street where I was raised and populated the houses with imaginary characters. Almost every story has at least one room that was like a room in my house.
