Seven-year-old Anna will not understand what is about to happen. What will be scorched into her memory on this fateful day will be unthinkable.

Happy-go-lucky Anna adores her older sister. Together, they climb trees, fly kites, and swing on their back yard swing set. In a moment, Anna will begin an agonizing journey, traumatized and alone that will last nearly ten years.

Now seventeen, Anna’s downward spiral has been easy to hide. She’s the ninth child of ten, and distress is overlooked in the constant clamor of growing up in a huge family. But something is different this time around. As the tenth anniversary of that fateful day approaches, everyday simplicities, like showering and eating, become increasingly difficult. Anna feels the end is nearing—or is it the beginning of something far worse?

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Julie Oleszek’s skillful writing is able to evoke vivid images of young children at vigorous play, of older children struggling with issues at school, especially when troubled by traumatic life events, and finally the rebellious, resistant mind of the older teen in crisis. The work is beautifully written, and is engaging throughout. The author could have ended the story when Anne returned home for a visit and spent significant time with her mother, but she takes us through several more very satisfying encounters, leaving us both satisfied and hoping for future novels.

I loved the light style of writing. The subject matter was intense but the light writing style made it an easy to read page turner. It’s the kind of book that you just want to stay up as late as possible to finish. I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait for the sequel. I have already recommended this book to many people…some friends and family members…and some patients who are struggling with childhood related trauma.

How do I write how deeply this story touched me…there are just no words! It is so thought provoking and personal! It takes you through the life of one young woman in grief but leads you to the lives of others also in a desperate search. Even has twists that are real and fit the story so well. Never expected to find such a wonderful story but so glad I did!

Filled with emotional crises, the book captures the interest of the reader with its insight into the progressive development of the disease. Heart-wrenching drama in flashbacks to this late teen’s early childhood create an in-depth look at the cause and effects of anorexia. The book was hard to put down, but often required stepping away from the intense pain the character was suffering. Excellent characterization.

I laughed, I cried, and I cheered for Anna as she dug through layer after layer of pain and loss. A brave first novel, ‘The Fifth Floor’ brings a rare depth of insight into timeless issues that teens face. Unflinching and raw, Julie Oleszek delivers a book that offers more than just a good read. She offers hope.
