This engagement party threatens to be extremely uncomfortable, in fact quite possibly a disaster. Wayne and Clarissa are a young London couple whose immediate families are about to meet for the first time. Trying to create harmony amongst mums and dads from very different backgrounds and social classes is hard enough but in this case there are eight parents, step-parents and partners to cope with.

This humorous contemporary novel spans the week leading up to and including the lunch celebration at a posh country hotel. Increasingly the events during that week reduce the likelihood of the engagement party being remotely pleasant, romantic or successful. Will Wayne and Clarissa’s relationship be sufficiently resilient to survive?

Anyone who has struggled to make something of a broken family and has felt guilty about the impact on their children will recognize such feelings in this novel. And adult children who read it will appreciate that however bad things were in their own family, it could have been a lot worse!

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

This is a book that is light and witty (a very original wit) whilst at the same time showing an incredible insight into the different dimensions of human nature – including the less pleasant ones – of both men and women (the author is a man and but he certainly knows how we women think!). The story is engrossing from beginning to end – I could not put the book down.
Can’t wait to read the author’s next book!

The Engagement Party is a thoroughly delightful, lighthearted look at an extended family-to-be as they prepare and then meet for the first time at the engagement party of their children & stepchildren. Cleverly done, this is a humorous and engaging book you’ll want to read straight through from beginning to end.

In my experience most books — even those most highly recommended as The Engagement Party was — take a while to warm to. Not THIS one. From the very first page I was hooked. I found myself drawn into the action, chapter after chapter, feeling as if these were characters I actually knew and cared about… I cannot recommend this book highly enough and would love to see it adapted for the stage or screen.

Gould’s first novel is gently humorous and well observed. A good light read. Most enjoyable, and offering some pithy insights into class and snobbery in England. I loved the comeuppances, black eyes, car crashes and the tangled perambulations of exes and steps. The pace of the book is just right.

This is a genuine discovery: a high-quality novel that deserves major critical appreciation.
