Film lover Barbara Marr is a typical suburban mom living the typical suburban life in her sleepy little town of Rustic Woods, Virginia. Typical, that is until she sets out to find the missing link between a bizarre monkey sighting in her yard and the bone chilling middle-of-the-night fright fest at the strangely vacant house next door. When Barb talks her two friends into some seemingly innocent Charlie’s Angels-like sleuthing, they stumble upon way more than they bargained for and uncover a piece of neighborhood history that certain people would kill to keep on the cutting room floor.

Enter sexy PI Colt Baron, Barb’s ex-boyfriend who would love to be cast as new leading man, filling the role just vacated by her recently estranged husband, Howard. When Colt flies in from out of town to help Barb, events careen out of control and suddenly this mini-van driving mother of three becomes a major player in a treacherous and potentially deadly FBI undercover operation. It’s up to her now. With little time to spare, she and she alone, must summon the inner strength necessary to become a true action heroine and save the lives of those she loves. The question is can she get them out alive before the credits roll?

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Take the Monkeys and Run by Karen Cantwell could easily become one of my favorite books of all time.

I really enjoyed the romantic aspects of this novel; they fit in seamlessly and were as much a mystery as the mystery! If you need an escape or a great beach read, this might very well be it. Highly recommended!

I love this book! Karen Cantwell has given us everything we could want in a novel: mystery, romance and humor. Not to mention the fantastic heroine, Barbara Marr, who is as vulnerable as she is courageous, and as determined as she is comical. Though confronted with everything from possible infidelity to an old love to gangsters in her garden, Barbara just sticks out her chin and sallies forth. But humor is what really makes Monkeys special. You’ll read it once for the mystery, and twice more for the laughs! If you read this book and you don’t laugh out loud, you should have your funny bone examined. 😉

About The Author

I’m so glad and honored that you have visited my author page.

I have been writing plays and short stories for many years, some of which were published in various college literary magazines. More recently, my short story “The Recollections of Rosabelle Raines,” was published in the mystery anthology Chesapeake Crimes: They Had it Comin’ available at

My first novel, TAKE THE MONKEYS AND RUN, is a comedy-mystery, inspired, to some degree by a true monkey sighting in my own neighborhood. Because I love to laugh as well as make other people laugh, I have great fun writing the characters Barbara Marr, her friends and her adversaries. When I set out to write this book, I knew I wanted to write something that readers would say, “Now that was FUN.” I HOPE I have achieved that goal. And if I did, please feel free to drop me a line at and let me know! I love to hear from readers. (especially if they LIKE the book!)

I’ve recently released a new book called FOXY’S TALE, co-written with my friend LB Gschwandtner. This is the first in a planned chick-lit series. And yes, I’m working on a second Barbara Marr novel, CITIZEN INSANE. You can find out more about these upcoming books at my website, I hope you’ll stop by!

Again, thank you for stopping by!
