Nicola Thomas writes letters to her dead father. She makes her living putting out fires, and she makes her home in the house-that-heroin-bought on a green Jell-O lake in central Illinois. The wind over the water cries like a little child, and all the votive candles in Saint Michael’s can’t push back the night, Nicola’s father remains as brilliant and violent in death as he was in life.

Running from a miscarriage that she wished into actuality and pursued by the unwanted attentions of an ex boyfriend, Nicola is trying to learn how to breathe again. She is also discovering that the people closest to her wield the most damaging weapons of all. John Santangelo – smooth as Baileys over ice, and just as sweet – will ultimately use her as a means to an end even while he is falling in love with her. And nothing could prepare Nicola for Benny Jones, the little half witch southern girl who blows into town in the wake of a hurricane and becomes something more than a friend.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Lucy Crowe can write! Her characters come alive on the page, and she involves all the reader’s senses in her scenes. One doesn’t merely follow the plot of the story, but lives it. Literary Fiction at its best.

Lucy Crowe’s “Sugar Man’s Daughter” is novel that features gritty realism and extraordinary characters, written in outstanding prose that borders on poetic. Crowe’s voice is unique and unforgettable. I look forward to reading more by this awesome author, and can’t wait for her next book.

I warn you, you pick this up, Lucy’s writing style will addict you, leaving you begging for more when the book comes to an end. Writing so extraordinary it should be illegal.

What a story! Sugar Man’s Daughter was a tough, raw, but very enjoyable read. Lucy Crowe has a unique writing style that’s laid-back but allows you to truly connect with the characters. It allowed me to really get into the book and immerse myself in the story.

I won’t take the time to summarize this story, but I will tell you… nobody writes a sentence or turns a phrase like Lucy Crowe. Her characters are complicated, but likeable. They all have flaws, some more than others, but that just makes them all the more interesting.

About The Author

Lucy Crowe divides her time amongst her main loves – family, firefighting and fitting words to life – and occasionally she is astounded by the blending of all three. Her rural home, shared by husband and children, is close enough to Chicago to catch the bright lights, and far enough away to see the stars. Several of her short stories have enjoyed publication under the name C.E. Jones. “Sugar Man’s Daughter” is her first novel.

Thank you for considering today’s Book Of The Day – Lucy Crowe and ENT appreciate it.
