Robert J. Duperre, author of The Fall and Dead of Winter, now presents Silas, a contemporary fantasy novel.

Ken Lowery is a man at odds with his life. He hates his job, is disappointed in his marriage, and feels resigned to leading a mundane existence.

That all changes when his wife brings home a rambunctious Black Labrador puppy named Silas, who forges a remarkable connection with Ken and begins to heal his inner turmoil. When some neighborhood children start to go missing, he takes it upon himself to protect those around him and is thrust into a surreal world where monsters roam. Not everything is what it seems to be, he soon discovers, including his new best friend.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

I wept, guffawed (yes, guffawed), experienced a captivating prism of emotions ranging from pure elation to absolute loathing, and finally finished the damn thing with a sense of harmony usually so out of reach in the progression through daily monotony. While many reviewers regard books as “un-put-downable,” this was quite the opposite; I found myself intentionally lengthening the process in order to prolong my enjoyment. In short, I didn’t want it to end. I beg of you: please, please, PLEASE read this book. Without a doubt, it was the best thing I’ve done for myself in years.

I started out thinking this was a book about a man and his dog, and it turned into something so totally different from what I thought or typically read. That being said, I really loved the book. I’m not much into fantasy/science fiction – but it was such an absorbing, well written story, I kept resenting all the interruptions in my life that were keeping me from reading.

I will say that this book definitely took me through a realm of emotions. It took many twists and turns some of which I suspected may be coming and others that caught me off guard, which in my opinion was one of the things that made this such a great read. It was told in such a way that I was not anxious for it to end, on the contrary I kept thinking to myself…”ok, where is he heading here because there could be so many possibilities”.
