John Lawson, sheriff of the quiet Hill Country town of Bolero, Texas, attempts to quell a feud between the local megachurch and a construction contractor, but it escalates from picketing to vandalism to arson.

The case is derailed by the unwelcome return of John’s free-wheeling bipolar father, who arrives in the same red Mustang he drove away twenty-four years ago when he abandoned the family.

But ultimately it is the muffin that his overzealous deputy bags as evidence that threatens John’s ordered life, possibly beyond repair.

After six years of silence, Whittington’s highly anticipated entrance into the general fiction market combines his considerable storytelling talents with influences as diverse as Richard Russo and Michael Connelly. Muffin Man strikes a balance between comedy and drama and takes the trademark Whittington elements of rich setting, engaging characters, and turn of phrase to a new depth.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

If you love the English language, beautifully wrought quirky characters, similes and metaphors so artful they make you smile, and if you can resist (or else lovingly submit to) the temptations of passionately described epicurean gifts so pervasive in this part of Texas, you’ll find much to love in Muffin Man.

I love reading Brad Whittington’s works, knowing that the experience is always going to be enjoyable, refreshing, and “smirkishly” humorous. This read was no exception!
Reading the Muffin Man was a delight… For anyone who enjoys reminiscing about having lived in SmallTown, USA or chooses to fantasize about what that experience must be like, with a flavor of mystery suspense and excitement added – this is the perfect read!

Muffin Man is an excellent read. It tackles problems both large and small, real and imagined. Brad addresses how a family torn by some of the life’s more difficult challenges can find reconciliation. A great book, difficult to put down

After years of waiting, my hunger was finally satiated by the newest offering from the Whittington menu. “Muffin Man” is well worth the missed hours of sleep as I devoured every morsel from the time it was served, until the last crumb disappeared. The characters, the plot, the premise created what I think to be the finest book by this author to date. I have to admit though, that I am already hungry for the next delight from this Brad Whittington.

Ever since I finished reading Whittington’s “Fred” trilogy, I’ve looked forward to his next story about life in small town Texas. Muffin Man was worth the wait! Whittington skillfully weaves multiple plot lines into an irresistible story of family, politics, murder, and justice in a setting so clearly drawn that you can feel the unrelenting Texas heat, smell the mountain cedar, and taste the dust.
