The story begins in 1927 when Anne Johnson abandons her family in Ohio for the freedom of Paris. Her father hires Pinkerton agent Michael Temple to bring her home. Amid the artists, adventurers, and expats who have thronged to the city, Temple picks up Anne’s trail. It leads to Left Bank cafes, nightclubs in Montmartre, the homes of celebrated hostesses, the offices of boutique publishers, an art gallery of questionable repute, a painter’s studio, and a smugglers den. But as the summer of 1927 draws to a close, Anne has become an enigma, and Temple is left with more questions than answers.

1989. Although pushing 90 and feeling his age, Temple is hungry for a final adventure. He happens across information that hints at a solution to the mysteries surrounding that long-ago summer. He returns to Paris seeking answers, only to find more than he bargained for. But Temple has a last plan, one that will transform deceit and infirmity to an approximation of justice.

Lost among the Dead and Dying is both a prequel and a sequel to Mears’s Chasing Dietrich, which was named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best of 2012.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Mr. Mears keeps you guessing, right up to the end. I enjoy feeling as if I am actually walking the streets of Paris thinking some of the same thoughts as Michael Temple, feeling part of the story. Can’t wait to download his other works.

Well developed characters with interesting twists and turns. This is the second book I have read by this author. I recommend it to those who enjoy a mystery with a touch of history.

Author Michael Mears spins a marvelous suspense-filled page-turner set in one of the most glamorous and evocative of times and places…Paris in the 20’s. His acute sense of history weaves throughout to make this much more than your everyday detective novel, although it does at times, seem akin to the twists, turns, and fun of a Dashiell Hammett.

With his second Michael Temple novel, Mr. Mears has written a story that is so good that I almost didn’t want it to end.

Lost Among the Dead and Dying is a compelling read that also has a great sense of time and place, beautifully recreating the atmosphere of 1920’s Paris… I enjoyed Lost Among the Dead and Dying immensely; if you like detective novels served up with a generous dash of poignancy, this one is certainly worth a read.
