A young man’s search for his grandmother, and himself.

He is a young man, navigating career and relationship uncertainties, caught up in his own life. But a grudging afternoon visit in New York City with his grandmother will open windows to an untold family past – and a profound friendship with the extraordinary woman who will change his life.

Finding Maria tells a story of love and discovery, of tragedy and growth. As they walk museums and see films, they talk about her younger years in Budapest, including stories of Holocaust survival and an escape from Communism, leading him to a deeper and more mature understanding of his grandmother, and himself.

This beautiful memoir calls us to ask, to learn, and to love.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

This is a thrilling and moving account of a man and his grandmother rediscovering one another. It combines a deep dive into the intimacy of their relationship, and at the same time delving into her memories of the Holocaust reads like an adventure story. Sucked me in from the very first page.

A small, delicate and carefully written book about a great friendship that crossed generations. It made me wish that I could remember my own Jewish grandmother. I think a lot of people will enjoy this book, whether you’re Jewish or Hungarian or not.

This is a beautifully written story, deeply moving and profound. I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. Szabo explores his grandmother’s life and weaves a tender story of love, respect, admiration and awe.

Very well written and moving book. Everyone can relate to this story and several lessons can be learned. I loved this book.

Tender portrait of a remarkable woman. Szabo captures her spirit at her peak, then opens his heart to the reader as he watches her decline. The author shifts gracefully back and forth through time, and depicts the love and the bitterness, the self-absorption and the generosity of family members in a few brave strokes.
