It’s been hundreds of years since the Darkness last surfaced, a grim time when both humans and Catmages lost their lives. But now the Wild Ones work with humans again, and thirteen-year-old Andy Cohen gets the surprise of his life when a talking cat shows up in his front yard.

Goldeneyes, a powerful Catmage, needs Andy’s help. In the exciting first installment of this new series, Meryl Yourish takes the reader into a world of magical cats, dark powers, and a boy who finds himself entangled in their war.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

An excellent entry in the young adult category! The characters are solid, believable, and very entertaining. I especially liked how the author gently included actual educational items, from my experience something that sorely lacks in this genre.

The story is well-paced and enjoyable for anyone regardless of their age. The characters are as flawed as they are entertaining and their development over the course of the book is worth the read. Pick up a copy for the young reader in your life, then make sure you have one for yourself so you don’t need to keep borrowing theirs.

What I loved most was Yourish’s vivid descriptions of the cats, their coloration’s, their eyes, their temperament. She has an uncanny knack of yanking the reader into her world, and keeping it crisp and clear throughout. I highly recommend this novel not only for all children from 13 and up, but also their parents, to share these delights with an age group starting to pull away.

I found this book a delight to read. “Darkness Rising: Book One of the Catmage Chronicles” has believable characters with strong interactions and “GASP” some gentle teaching designed to encourage research in a YA reader. A telling sign for me is when I put a book down I want to know more about the characters. Ms Yourish has done that for her heroes and villains alike.

Cats, magic, villains and youthful heroes…what more could you ask for in this rich modern day young adult story, except to eagerly await the next book in the series!

About The Author

Meryl Yourish attended the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop at Michigan State University, which led to her first fiction sale.

After spending most of her life in northeastern New Jersey, Meryl moved to Richmond, Virginia in 2002. She spent her first six years in Richmond teaching fourth graders in religious school at a local synagogue. Although a teacher really shouldn’t play favorites, the hero of The Catmage Chronicles was named after one of her students (he thinks it’s cool).

Today she spends her time writing and lives with her two cats, one of whom looks suspiciously like Letsan.
