A rejected marriage proposal propels young Hank Gragg into a turbulent and uncertain future. He abandons family, security and the South to enlist as a Union soldier, and later refuses retreat from his first bloodied action without proof he has been there. He takes it from a dying enemy.

Fed by the compassion he finds in the Confederate’s last letter and his own unsettled dreams and troubling memories, Hank imagines a romance that drives him relentlessly toward an impossible rendezvous.

All the while, Elizabeth, the widow, struggles with burdens left by her husband, even as neighbors conspire against her. And what is she to make of this Union soldier — this enemy — so set on coming to her? Is there hope? Or is it merely a young man’s futile fantasy?

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

An excellent read. I found myself turning page after page and finding a new adventure on each page. Mr. Roueche has included enough history for the Civil War enthusiast, a good love story for the romantic, and a lot of action for everyone else.

The hero and heroine have both strengths and weaknesses that make them likable. And the villain is truly detestable! Three days after I finished the novel, I was still thinking about them and had to remind myself they were fictional. The love story is a treat and the book is very well written. A great read!

Roueche makes you feel like you are actually there. As the plot twists and grows, it draws the reader further in, wanting to see not only the detailed historical storyline (which I admit I am woefully uneducated in), but also the outcome of the fictional plot and characters. A nice escape from the here and now (and isn’t that what we read novels for?).

I highly recommend this book for your next book club! Would definitely be enjoyed by a wide range of personalities. Thanks for the good read.

There were moments of profound thought that kept me pondering long after I finished reading it. Even out of the ashes of war, people go on becoming, hopefully, better people. I highly recommend this book.

About The Author

Michael J. Roueche grew up in Virginia and has an indelible affection for the Old Dominion. Always a romantic, only in recent years did he discover the Civil War that had always surrounded him, thanks to Bruce Catton books from his father’s library and a good friend who gave him a copy of Michael Schaara’s Killer Angels. He is ever inspired by the examples of those who maintain their integrity as they persevere and overcome obstacles.

With a deepening background in the Civil War history and prompted by an “odd” experience at Manassas National Battlefield Park, Beyond the Wood was born.

He and his wife of 35 years now live in Colorado, where they enjoy hiking and exploring the High Plains and Rocky Mountains, with their alpine vistas, aspen groves and evergreen forests, and amazing wildlife. They have five children and several grandchildren.

He is currently sweating out the finishing touches on his second book, A River Divides, second in the Beyond the Wood series.

He invites you to “investigate” him further at his website. It’s interesting to see the flesh behind the ink!

Thank you for considering today’s Book Of The Day – Michael J. Roueche and ENT appreciate it.
