Down twisted corridors of thought, something waits. Over broken pathways of memory, it pursues. Though unseen, it is close enough to touch… Critically-acclaimed author Chloe Sender is lost. Lost in an abusive past; lost within her fragmented mind. And she is lost within the pages of her own incomplete manuscript – a story she barely remembers writing that haunts her with every word, with every increasingly twisted sentence.

Sleep-deprived and driven to complete the soul-destroying work, she begins to tear at the seams of her relationships. Her nightmares escalate in intensity and violence until she attempts to destroy the work for the sake of her sanity. But just outside her consciousness there is someone else – some thing else that will not be silenced. Shimmering at the periphery of her vision, capering through her nightmares and seeping into the pages of her manuscript, an ancient evil is in pursuit.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

I stand in awe of the intellect, the creative imagination, that wrote this novel. This book functions on so many levels–less a vast cast of characters than a multiplicity of levels per character. What an imagination is this! Mine feels as if it has been stretched like salt water taffy, then popped back into place, over and over again. Certainly I end the book a different creature than when I had begun it.

Martin Reaves’s newest novel stares evil in the face and shows its readers just what it sees. I don’t think this book is about hypothetical evils. I think it represents real evil in fictional form, exposing it so that we can understand it and its destructive, multi-generational effects. So yes, it’s a very disturbing novel. It’s not something that you read for entertainment, but rather for the intensity of the reading experience, and to learn why the worst parts of our world are the way they are.

This is an amazing read, part mystery, part horror, with lots of supernatural. The characters are well fleshed out and I found myself lost in the pages.

Martin Reaves’ superbly elegant prose seduces the reader into a sexy romance between the wide-eyed Chloe, a brilliant writer with a dark past and the magnificent Dray, casually performing her yoga with beads of sweat trickling down her black skin. Reaves weaves his tale so skillfully, the reader is transfixed, fascinated, unable to look away even as the horrors intensify.
