“A delicious autobiography.” -K. Schwarting

New York Times Bestseller

For better or worse, almost all of us grow up at the table. It is in this setting that Ruth Reichl’s brilliantly written memoir takes its form. For, at a very early age, Reichl discovered that “food could be a way of making sense of the world . . . if you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were.”

Tender at the Bone is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by unforgettable people, the love of tales well told, and a passion for food. In other words, the stuff of the best literature. The journey begins with Reichl’s mother, the notorious food-poisoner known for-evermore as the Queen of Mold, and moves on to the fabled Mrs. Peavey, onetime Baltimore socialite millionaress, who, for a brief but poignant moment, was retained as the Reichls’ maid. Then we are introduced to Monsieur du Croix, the gourmand, who so understood and yet was awed by this prodigious child at his dinner table that when he introduced Ruth to the soufflé, he could only exclaim, “What a pleasure to watch a child eat her first soufflé!” Then, fast-forward to the politically correct table set in Berkeley in the 1970s, and the food revolution that Ruth watched and participated in as organic became the norm. But this sampling doesn’t do this character-rich book justice. After all, this is just a taste.

Tender at the Bone is a remembrance of Ruth Reichl’s childhood into young adulthood, redolent with the atmosphere, good humor, and angst of a sensualist coming-of-age.

Oh, for a simpler time! Paradise Jones dreams of the Hollywood glamour days. Clothes, hair, vintage car–you name it, she’s got it. She’s classic retro, a 21st-century image of her favorite Golden Era stars–Doris, Audrey, Esther, Marilyn. The entertainment rags call Paradise eccentric. The studios rarely call at all. When an altercation with her leering stepfather forces her to flee Los Angeles, Paradise leaves behind everything she loves and longs for.

A few hundred miles east, Doc Morales’ years of hard work in the minors of Major League Baseball have produced exactly one at bat in the Big Show. A collision at first, a blown knee, and adios dreams. Nothing left to live for but pick-up games and his collection of old movies. Nothing, that is, until beautiful, damaged Paradise Jones crashes into his small, Arizona town. So begins an epic road trip that will change everything.

Throw in a couple of oddball bounty hunters, a forgotten movie-star boat captain, a cowboy priest, and a dashboard Jesus that is more than meets the eye, and Paradise and Doc have all the ingredients they need to cook up a fun and quirky slice of Americana pie.

Rumours start immediately that he was murdered.

Nineteen years later in France, Hilary the Englishman is dismissed from his position as tutor when his student, Alys, a young girl with whom he has fallen in love, dies of fever.

Turned out in the street, Hilary meets a strange man who offers to buy Hilary a meal if he does him a favour. He gives Hilary a pouch of silver, and a message to be delivered to Count Fulk in Anjou.

Fearing he will be accused of murder, Hilary flees. But he owes a debt of honour to deliver the message.

Hilary knows only one man can help him.

His former teacher, the brilliant Peter Abelard.

Much has happened to Abelard in the years since Hilary knew him. Although he may not be the man he was, he comes to the aid of his former student, deciphering the message.

Hilary and Abelard’s journey will take them through France, England, and Jerusalem as they race against time to save their own lives, and the fate of the monarchy.

For there is a mysterious Saxon claimant to the throne.

“The book is a wonderful blend of personal story (one so many of us can identify with), enchantingly told, with recipes… It all spreads happiness. Lovely!” Bel Mooney, author and journalist

It is 1965 and the air is light with the idea of freedom, love and the Beatles, but eighteen year old Jess, a feisty young woman with ideas of her own, is feeling stifled by her puritanical religious family background in working class England.

Keen to escape her mother’s narrow-minded Rulebook and rigid plans for her life, and her silent, strangely disturbing father, she plans to defer her university study and instead escape her past to flee to Ghana, West Africa, for a gap year, teaching and nursing in the jungle.

Her parents cannot understand Jess’s wish to leave behind her comfortable life in England and her perfect Quaker boyfriend, Simon.

In the 60s, Africa means darkness and danger to most people, not least her family, but to Jess it conjures up a picture of exotic adventure and freedom.

Little does she realize what this year will, in fact, bring: joys, horrors, love and tragedy.

As she struggles to comprehend the abject poverty and hopelessness of the people of Ghana, Jess begins to find herself and think about what she really wants in life.

She must find her way on her own and learn what fate has in store for her, as she becomes embroiled in the turmoil of the small war-torn African nation under a controversial and harsh dictatorship.

When she meets Jim, a handsome, friendly yet mysterious US soldier, Jess must face the dangers of both civil war and unexpected romance.

Where does she truly belong and can she escape her troubled past?

And why do the drumbeats haunt her dreams?

Paths of Armor: The Fifth Armored Division in World War II – Amazon

“A very well written factual account of day to day war in Europe, as seen, lived and told by the soldiers themselves. This books makes the whole epic more real and impressive.” -Benjamin T.

The Fifth Armored Division’s record of achievement in World War Two is unsurpassed by that of any other division.

It led the Normandy breakthrough; it sprang the Falaise trap which meant the death of the Seventh German Army and the Field Marshal who commanded it; it was the first division to reach the Eure River, the Seine, and the Our; it cut off near Mons thousands of Germans; it was the first to enter Germany and at the end of the war it was nearer to Berlin than any combat group in the American Army.

This is the history of that division and the men and tanks that fought in it.

Vic Hillery and Major Emerson Hurley, two veterans of the division, have provided a thorough account of this fascinating division in World War Two, from its inception in 1941 through to the end of the war.

Hillery and Hurley fully explain how the Fifth Division, under the tactically brilliant leadership of Jack E. Heard, Sereno E. Brett and Lunsford E. Oliver, were able to revolutionize armored warfare.

With detailed analysis the authors reconstruct the battles of the division and explain how they were able to carve a path through Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Alsace, the Rhineland and Central Europe.

Paths of Armor is essential reading for anyone interested in the Western Front of World War Two and the development of tank warfare that occurred through that war.
