Embers – Nook

“…really enjoyed reading this book. It was hard to put it down….” -M.S.

There are descendants of angels walking among us. Ember is one of them.

Embers is an epic paranormal adventure/romance about a seventeen year old girl who discovers that she’s immune to fire and any other injury when she’s in a horrific car crash that kills her parents.

Following a violent episode with her aunt’s boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Ember’s exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she learns that she’s a Watcher, a descendant of angels.

While Ember is instructed about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two teenagers who live in a frightening walled compound in the forest.

Inexplicitly drawn to one of the young men in particular, an impossible romance develops.

But it’s cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war that’s been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years.

When the compound’s inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil, and the grayness in between.

Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn’t only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends.

Pelmen hates being a tanner, but that’s all he would ever be, thanks to the rigid caste system amongst his people, the hevelens.

Then he meets Master Galn Boisencroix and his family.

The master carpenter opens up a world of archery to young Pelmen, who excels at his new found skill.

But Pelmen’s intractable father would have none of it, and tries to force Pelmen to stay in the tannery.

One day, however, Pelmen’s best friend and Master Galn’s son, Teleg, disappears.

Lured away by the prospect of untold riches through mining amberrock, the most precious substance in the world, Teleg finds himself a prisoner of the Nylevs, fierce fire-wielding worshipers of the god of destruction.

Now Pelmen must leave all he knows behind, overcome his fears and travel across the land, in search of his childhood friend.

Along the way, he will ally himself with strange and fantastic beings: a shaman who controls the Breath of Aoles, or the power of the wind, a krongos, a creature of the mineral realm who can become living rock, and a malian, adept at water magic.

A special bond is formed in the hospital between Danny, a mischievous, curious and very bright ten-year-old who has lost a leg and an arm as well as his mother in a terrorist bombing and Autumn, a young journalist sent to interview him before his tenth operation.

Autumn wants to publish Danny’s story because she believes he is a hero, but Danny says he isn’t a hero at all, he was simply sitting in a restaurant waiting for his food when the terrorist came in and blew herself up.

During their conversation, Autumn tells Danny about her son and her life as a single mother.

He misses his own mother, and harbors a suspicion that the journalist keeps coming to see him because she is interested in his newly widowed father.

Autumn thinks that Danny should have the tenth operation, which would basically be plastic surgery to remove the shrapnel from his face and minimize the scarring.

He does not want to forget, he would rather have a scarred face that will always remind him of his mother and all that he lost.

And it would also be a reminder of the reality of life in Israel, a reality in which innocent children pay the price.

During the difficult days preceding the operation, still tormented by indecision and struggling against the pain, Danny undergoes a maturity process that will prepare him for his release from the hospital.

He learns not to be jealous of his sister, who survived the bombing with only a few scratches. He learns not to be afraid of the Arab nurse who wants to give him an injection.

He develops a new and different sense of humor and comes to realize that despite his grief and loss, life goes on and can be beautiful. He discovers that he can enjoy life if he only reaches out for it.
