Growing up in Dinwiddie, Virginia, on his father’s prosperous plantation, Will’s childhood upbringing is the kind that inspires both humility and a relentless work ethic. It contrasts sharply with his best friend, Charles Crowder, the heir to a nearby estate as magnificent as his family fortune, a boy prone to frivolous mischief.

When only 17 years old, Will marries his beloved, sharing the joys and heartaches of family life. Reluctant to undertake a dangerous commitment that pulls him away from home, Will avoids becoming embroiled in the French and Indian War. But years later, now the head of a large family and a thriving tobacco plantation, Will finds it harder to resist the call of duty when the Revolutionary War breaks out. Enlisting in the 5th Virginia Militia Regiment with his son, Will soon discovers that the actions needed to survive as a military scout challenge his strong moral compass. As the War drifts towards his Dinwiddie home, he has no choice but to muster out of the Continental Army.
