“An excellent fantasy read. With the return of a beaten army with a new force to contend with, the book moves quickly while developing the characters and the story line.” -Quentin S.

Two warrior lovers, separated by their allegiances–and a demonic horde…Jessup is a scout for the Ilkasar Empire, even though it conquered his own people. His love for Tamra of Wayfare Keep is the one thing connecting him to the Empire he hates. But Tamra’s loyalty is to her sworn oaths as captain of the Keep’s guard and protector of the Empire. Though she loves Jessup, their relationship struggles against history and duty.

On a scouting mission, Jessup discovers the tables are about to be turned on conquering Ilkasar: enemies are using a blood ritual to summon invincible demons, and now they’re at the head of an invading horde heading straight for Tamra’s forces. The two lead an army in a fierce battle against the demons, but their soldiers are slaughtered. In the chaos, Jessup and Tamra lose one another. Tamra and her remaining forces retreat to the walled city of Madrian where she leads a last stand they cannot win, while Jessup races for magical help. But even if he arrives in time, the Empire’s salvation may lie in a sacrifice that will destroy them both.

Told in five parts, this novel unravels the challenges between two unlikely Nisei friends, Jim and Russell, into adulthood during the Second World War. As restrictions are imposed, (even in the safe, rural community of Bainbridge Island,) as harassments escalate, (including the F.B.I. invading their homes and deporting their fathers to Montana for espionage trials,) the fated day arrives: evacuation of all Japanese civilians. Rounded up like cattle, tagged, they are hauled to the fringes of Death Valley: Manzanar. Together they must survive racism, gang violence, and the harsh elements of the environment. Together they must prove their loyalty, especially after a tragic riot on the eve of Pearl Harbor’s anniversary. While Russell enlists in a segregated army, becoming part of one the most decorated units in U.S. history, Jim is sent to a different camp for the “No-No” boys: those who are marked disloyal. Removed from their families, they are forced to reevaluate their identities and discover, most importantly, what it means to forgive.

Shelby Nichols is an average woman who is married to the only guy she ever fell for. Her life is organized and predictable, revolving around her husband and two children. All that changes the day she stops at the grocery store for some carrots. As the cashier rings up her purchases, a gunman is busy robbing the bank inside the store. When a customer grabs the robber’s mask, he is shot and everyone runs for cover. Everyone except Shelby, who finds herself face to face with the killer. The next thing she knows, she’s lying on the floor with a bullet wound to her head. Luckily, the bullet only grazes her scalp, and she doesn’t suspect any lasting affects until later, when she suddenly ‘hears’ what people are thinking.

With this uncanny ability, her life takes on a whole new dimension. Her kids think she’s bossy and too old to understand them, but that’s nothing compared to her husband. He says he loves her, but what is it about the redhead at work that he doesn’t want her to know? As if that isn’t enough, the gunman knows she can identify him, and he’s out to silence her forever. In her fight to stay alive, she is saved from certain death by a handsome hit-man with ties to organized crime. This pulls Shelby even deeper into danger, where knowing someone’s thoughts can not only hurt her feelings, but get her killed.
