Lessons (and other morbid drabbles)
by Michael Crane
Rating: 4.2 Stars
Genre: Horror Anthology

“It takes talent to engage a reader in a hundred words, and then to shock her. Each of Michael Crane’s drabbles did just that. Each story is a nugget of unexpected evil. Mr. Crane’s style is easy and enjoyable, journeying the reader into a false sense of security and then, bam! I look forward to the next collection of drabbles from this gifted author.” – Imogen Rose

A man learns a painful and valuable lesson… one finger at a time. An old couple bickers over disgusting leftovers. Kids go ignored when they tell their parents about the horrors that lurk in their bedrooms, until it’s too late…

LESSONS AND OTHER MORBID DRABBLES is a collection of twenty-five 100-word shorts that range from darkly comic to downright terrifying and wrong. Some shorts feature ghouls and monsters while others are simply about people behaving very, very badly. Which is scarier? Find out in this sick and twisted collection. Bleary-eyed and sleep deprived after a long overnighter into Mexico, solo sailor and SFPD police detective, Katrina Hunter, thinks the mermaid twenty yards behind her thirty-two foot Westsail is nothing more than a sailor’s hallucination But everything she knows about floaters convinces her to turn her boat around for another look.

Now, alone and isolated in the Mexican port’s police station for six hours she’s convinced that reporting a floater to authorities was a mistake. Even the arrival of a handsome, if somewhat dour, Mexican/Italian investigator does nothing to dispel her growing anxiety that she’s about to be charged with the murder. Chief Inspector, Raul Vignaroli, is as surprised by the attractive solo-sailor as he is to find that she’s a respected member of the San Francisco police force, and after some well-placed phone calls he’s sure that he’s found the perfect partner to help him solve a murder, if not the cure for his broken heart.

Jennifer, i feel you on books that have a good premise that that don’t foollw-through. It’s more difficult to write a good book than it seems.Okay, Rhonda, you have to take off your writer hat. Let it go, sis. You must. LOL!What I’ve learned is that readers are not us. Yes, there are some readers who move in our circles who notice things like point-of-view, but many don’t. To be honest, all head-hopping doesn’t bother me. Bad head-hopping does.
