Drone Strike
by Nathan Mosby
Rating: 5.0 Stars
Genre: Thriller and Suspense
Price: $0.99

“It gives a new slant on the terrorism war by humanizing some on the other side, which I found very intriguing. It had excellent character development.” -Neil C.

It’s a dark September night in 2008, and three people have no idea what’s about to hit them …North of Baghdad, Jake Stewart, a legendary Delta Force operator, has tracked the emir of Al Qaeda to his lair and called in a drone strike that will eliminate him. It’s a moment of triumph, but Jake’s still recovering from Marla Duncan, a Marine attack helicopter pilot who saved his life and became his lover before marrying someone else.

In coastal North Carolina, Jake’s sister Kate teaches anthropology, grieves for her lost husband, and feels a hopeful attraction to Percy Collum, a popular African-American history professor who is also Jake’s friend and Arabic teacher. South of Baghdad, Omar Rashid, an Iraqi farmer and former resistance fighter, has been rescued from jail by a mysterious group after a year of humiliation and torture. He’s headed home, looking forward to a peaceful life with his wife and children.

Then, without warning, Jake and Omar are hit by shocks that upend their lives and put them on a collision course. As their paths converge, Kate, Percy and Marla are inexorably drawn into the escalating spiral of fear and conflict. Suddenly, they must all face the darkness in their own pasts as they make choices that will be tragic or redemptive for them – and for America, as it races toward election eve.

Based on the real life attempt to assassinate Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800. Invalided out of the French Army, Alain Duval joins the Ministry of Police in Paris, led by the infamous Joseph Fouché. Newly appointed and off duty, he is strolling through the city when he sees a crowd waiting for Napoleon, the First Consul, not yet Emperor. He is jostled by some men leaving the area in a hurry and shortly afterwards a bomb, the ‘Infernal Machine’ explodes.

Next day, Duval describes the men to a police artist and joins the hunt for the bombers. Horse-shoes and barrel hoops send him searching all over Paris. Eventually he finds the warehouse used by the bombers and his mentor is killed in the subsequent fight. Some of the bombers are captured but others escape, then Napoleon puts an abrupt end to the search, blaming others for the outrage. But the story is not over. Duval falls in love with his mentor’s daughter, and together they find another of the bombers, leading to a surprise ending.

The third book of the trilogy begins on a blustery August day, and thirty-year-old Jay L. Lewis, a free-lancer reporter and short story writer, finds himself on a road headed for a small town named Dixon. No one is more surprised than he that this trip is even on his itinerary. Born and raised in L.A., where the Hollywood backdrop is just part of the mainstream of life, the idea of digging up old actresses, brushing the dust off their shoulders, and interviewing them, had never been an ambition of his. Yet, here he is, coasting down country roads on his way to meet Sherry Powers, an actress who had not been before a camera in over twenty years.

If not for Jay’s friendships with Doug Holden, Sherry’s old agent, Jay would have blown off the idea without looking back. But a note delivered to him in Doug’s weakened handwriting, sixteen years after Doug’s death, had now become a way of honoring his last wish. With great reservation, Jay heads for Dixon hoping this wild goose chase will end quickly so he will be able to catch the evening flight back to L.A. Yet what awaits him will undoubtedly, change the course of his life in ways he could never imagine.
