Get Alerted About New Kindle Books With RSS

by Greg on January 18, 2010

As of today, there are over 400,000 books at Amazon that are available for your Kindle. There are more and more Kindle books available each day. So, how do you keep track of all the new books that are becoming available?

One way is to sign up for the RSS feed of your favorite genre (or genres) of choice in the Amazon Kindle book store. If you’re not sure what an RSS feed is, here is a quick description of RSS:

The basic idea behind signing up for an RSS feed is that instead of checking your favorite sites everyday for updates, you get the updates sent right to your RSS reader as they happen.

The first thing you need to do is decide which RSS reader you’re going to use – I use Google’s reader (all the RSS readers that I’ve seen are free to use) which you can sign up for here – Google Reader. If you already have a gmail or other Google account, you can use that same log in for your Google Reader.

If you don’t like the Google Reader there are plenty of others to choose from. All you need to do to sign up for an RSS feed is to look on the page for something that says “Sign up for RSS Feed” or something similar to that. Some RSS feeds are kind of hard to find on websites. To make it a little easier to find the feed just do a CTRL + F (or Command + F on a Mac) which is the “find” query and type in “RSS” minus the quotes.

So, here’s what you need to do to use RSS to alert you to new books becoming available in the Amazon store:

  1. Go to the Kindle Store on your computer.
  2. Next, you need to go to Kindle Bestsellers which is located in the left hand column under “Special Features”.
  3. After clicking on “Kindle Bestsellers” you will then click on the “Hot New Releases” tab in the top left portion of the page. The click on “Books”.
  4. Next, choose your genre in the left hand column. This is where you’ll sign up for your RSS feed. The feed is located near the bottom of the page. It is after the last book on the page and right before the “Customer Discussions”.
  5. Just click on the link that says “Subscribe to (RSS feed description)” and it will ask you which reader you want your subscription to be on and you’re all set.

Any new releases in your genre will be automatically sent to your reader of choice. You can also use this on as many genres as you wish as well as any new bestsellers or movers and shakers – just click on those tabs at the top of the “Kindle Best Sellers” screen to choose them. There are RSS feeds that you can use to be notified of any blogs, newspapers, and magazines & journals too.

RSS is also a great way to keep track of all your favorite blogs like The Kindle Warehouse:). Some even let you have the RSS feed sent to your email instead of your reader. Here’s the RSS feed for The Kindle Warehouse: The Kindle Warehouse RSS Feed
If you’d like to have updates sent to your email, enter your email address in the box at the bottom right of this page.

Do you already use RSS feeds? How do you like them? If you’ve never used them before, I think you’ll really enjoy how easy it is to keep up to date on all your sites.
