A slave owner’s wife harbors a secret that threatens to unravel her marriage and the lives of those around her. Caroline Whitfield lives in the world she dreamt of as a child. Married to Jackson, a plantation owner, in the quiet hills of 1835 Montgomery County, Maryland, she enjoys a simple life, until new slaves, seven-year-old Sadie and her father, arrive. When Sadie’s daddy is taken from her, the young girl is forced to serve the master and mistress she holds responsible for her loss. With her grandmother, fellow slaves in the “Loom Room,” and a young man bent on obtaining his freedom, Sadie struggles to make sense of God’s will in the midst of pain. But Caroline harbors a secret that could bring her world crashing down, and her love for Sadie, the daughter no one knows she had, threatens to tear it all apart. Meanwhile, Caroline draws closer to an old friend, an empathetic and dependable married man. Now she must douse the raging flames of a jealous husband and fight to keep her perfect world intact. The Loom is a colorful tale of three families linked by a lie and their discovery that the truth is not always black and white.

Erdogan Denizli cleans up the messes other people make of their lives. Not their dirty houses or their dirty clothes – no, Erdogan gets a call when a bathroom is sprayed with arterial blood after a shamed pervert cuts his own throat, after a home-invasion-gone-wrong leaves bits of brain ground into the carpet, or when an undiscovered death drips putrefying body fluids into the apartment below. He’s a crime scene cleaner in Ventura County, California and after forensics have done their job, he gets to work…

It’s not his job to feel the pain of those left behind, or to feel sadness at a wasted and unmourned life, but he does. He can’t help it. But he doesn’t get involved; he can’t afford to – he can’t risk dredging up the shadows of his own past. But when, on a routine crime scene clean-up, he finds a piece of overlooked evidence, evidence that implicates the cops in an assassins-for-hire conspiracy, he can’t look the other way, because now his own life’s in danger. But who do you turn to for help when it’s the cops that want you dead?

Implicated is a contemporary but noirish thriller with a “cast of characters straight out of an Elmore Leonard novel”: Valerie, the femme fatale who wants to nail the cops who killed her husband… Maxim, the Azerbaijani mobster who wants in on a little bit of the American Dream … ill-fated Sammy the Schmuck with his penchant for other people’s lives (and other people’s money). And Brad and Mikey, the cops who’ve long since thrown “Serve and Protect” out the window.

This Princess isn’t going to take an arranged marriage lying down…

Imagine that you are a dangerously clever, thoroughly over-educated sixteen year old, who feels wholly disconnected from her current station in life and rather hates her father. Imagine also that you have the further misfortune to find yourself alive during the 13th Century, that your father is the philistine King of a small Central European country, and that he does not approve of the fact that you can quote Aristotle more expertly than you can curtsy. Finally to top everything off imagine that you have just learned that you are to be married off to a German nobleman who believes that you will make an excellent pawn in an ongoing struggle to become Holy Roman Emperor…
What do you do?

If your name is Aletheia–first and only daughter of His Majesty Edward IX, and most indubitably born in the wrong century–you proceed to flee. If your name is Aletheia you also find yourself embarking on a bizarre and comic odyssey across perilously chaotic medieval Europe. During her journey our heroine will encounter cross dressing Romanians, bamboozle criminally incompetent highwaymen, crush spherically odious tutors (using only the power of pure logic), and, in at least one desperate instance, impersonate the Virgin Mary, all in the hopes of reaching a final destination that is about to be sacked by an army of waylaid Crusaders…

The Ptorrigan Lode

Somewhere in the asteroid belt, at an outpost called Onstation, The Corporation controls all. Its female employees are required to drape themselves in the modest Muslim garment, the chador. And two brothers—Jay, a musician, and Von, The Corporation’s OnStation Director—are rivals for the love of one woman. This is the premise for The Ptorrigan Lode, a worthy successor to Kathryn Lance’s 1980s cult classic Pandora’s Genes. Jay, the musician, is addicted to chappa, a drug, associated with a now-extinct civilization, that increases creativity—among other things. Like most addictive substances, chappa eventually destroys those with a dependence on it. Jay will die without his chappa fix, but The Corporation has made chappa illegal. Von offers him a way to get all the chappa he might ever need, and get his life back in the process, but there’s a catch. More than one.

The Ptorrigan Lode keeps you at the edge of your seat and keeps you guessing all the while. It’s a quick read, but a satisfying one, that will nevertheless leave you hungry for more. In that case, I can recommend Lance’s earlier works, which are eerily relevant to much going on in our culture today.
