New Orleans lawyer Tubby Dubonnet is bored. He wants to bill enough hours to pay his alimony and keep his daughter in college, with enough left over for an occasional drink and a good meal, but he longs for something different and exciting.

When he’s offered a job researching the licensing requirements of the city’s new and lucrative gambling casino, he doesn’t care if he’s working for the Mob. Meanwhile, he becomes involved in executing the estate of an old friend who controls some dock leases on the wharf, and he agrees to help his daughter’s environmental group stop illegal dumping into the river.

As one might expect, the three cases curiously begin to converge: the toxic dumping, the dock leases, and the too-good-to-be-true casino job lead Tubby to the conclusion that he’s been set up to be the fall guy in an effort by the casino to expand its operations.

Suddenly Tubby is doing something different and exciting — he’s running for his life…

There are things Patrick Boyle will never forget: the sound of his own neck breaking at the moment of his death in the fall of 1970, the sweet taste of his mother’s chocolate cake, and the awful day his parents abandoned him in his childhood house-turned prison.

Nineteen-year-old Patrick wonders for decades if God has forgotten all about him or if he’s being punished for some terrible crime or sin over a lovely forty years trapped in an empty home. But when Sara Oswald, a strange woman with a mysterious past, buys his house, old feelings reawaken, and a new optimism convinces him that she’s the answer to his prayers.

Things are never simple, though, especially when she begins channeling the memories of his life and death in her writing.

Hunter Gamble is an idealistic young attorney in a very special area of the practice: arcane defense. Funded by enigmatic billionaire Charles McClain and aided by shy-but-energetic research attorney Kirsten Harper, he’s making the world a better place — one vampire, zombie, or werewolf client at a time. After all, they deserve their day in court too, right?

When a young zombie walks into Hunter’s office accused of murder (by brain-eating), Hunter’s idealism is tested as never before as he struggles to secure the man’s freedom. To do so, he must square off against a savvy and ambitious district attorney, contend with a judge who is deeply biased against arcanes, and stand up to a human-supremacist group which will stop at nothing — not even Hunter’s own death — to see his client convicted.

The Schmetterling Effect

Back in 2005, a German economist called Dr. Schmetterling drinks a lot of stout in an Irish pub in Berlin. Improbably, his night on the “black stuff” results in Germany taking action that provokes the Euro currency crisis. The crisis gets so bad that, a few years in the future from now, the European Union (EU) is reformed such that Germany dominates all member states from a new EU headquarters in Berlin. EU Police officers (EUPOs) with Draconian powers menace the people of all EU states. Ireland is thrown out of the EU and collapses economically.

Iran produces suitcase nukes and plans to detonate a number of them simultaneously to cripple Israel, thus allowing a mass attack on Israel by its neighbor states. Due to a software glitch, the plan goes wrong. A nuclear holocaust and a 50% reduction in the world’s oil supply result. World trade collapses due to the resulting energy shortage. Ireland’s situation gets even worse.

Tom Cosgrave lives in London with his brother Sean. He subdues a violent drunk on a train, but is arrested and beaten by Officer Green, a psychotic EUPO. Sean finds that the archives of Albion Oil & Gas, where he works, contain information, classified secret by EU diktat, to which he is denied access. His access attempt is reported to Officer Green, who notes that Sean is Tom’s brother.

Germany demands that the USA remove its bases. The US considers alternative locations in Europe. Only Ireland is interested, but it needs protection against the EU.

Officer Green is determined to get both brothers. He maneuvers Tom into a situation in which he is forced to escape abroad. He goes to Ireland, where he becomes embroiled in a plot to solve Ireland’s financial problems. Sean is asked to help.

The involvement of the USA ramps up. Air and ground military forces are mobilized. Officer Green goes totally out of control. Events proceed at a rapidly increasing rate, seemingly with a will of their own. The final outcome of Dr. Schmetterling’s night on the “black stuff” surprises everyone.
