The Eighties: A Bitchen Time To Be a Teenager!

The decade of the 1980s has been called the Decade of Decadence. Decadence is defined as “the act or process of falling into an inferior condition or state; deterioration; decay” or my favorite, “unrestrained or excessive self-indulgence.” For a decade that brought us Cabbage Patch Kids, Garbage Pail Kids, leg-warmers and New Wave, was it really self-indulgence?! For one kid growing up in the Central Valley of California, it was a time of self-discovery . . . a transformation from a kid, to a teenager, to a young adult . . . his growing up years. At times utterly hilarious, at times poignant and powerful, Tom relives his teenage years in this true-to-the-last-word memoir. Where were you when John Lennon died? When the Space Shuttle blew up? When Lawrence Taylor ended Joe Theisman’s career on live TV? When the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked Game 3 of the 1989 World Series? Tom will tell you where he was and what it meant to him. You’ll also hear about first kisses, first loves, a joke about your Uranus, avoiding fistfights, the joys of minimum-wage jobs, college roommates, and WHOLE LOT MORE. If you’re one of the 70 million Americans who can claim at least one teen year in the decade, you can relate to the era . . . if your kids can’t understand your fondness for your Breakfast Club and Princess Bride DVDs, this book may teach them a thing or two about YOUR growing up years. Go ahead, say the word “bitchen” outloud. Yeah, it was a bitchen time, the Eighties . . .

Corporate attorney Samantha Greco needs some peace and quiet to come to a decision about her career. Aiden Rourke has loved Sam for years. For one glorious night she was his. But then she fled, wounding his ego and his heart. Thrown together again, they soon discover time hasn’t diminished their fiery passion for each other. Only Aiden has ever been able to melt Sam with just a look or a touch. But the fear that she’s like her mother, who used men mercilessly, scares Sam to death.

The storm outside is nothing compared to the storm of desire, fear, and guilt raging inside Sam. But during their wild weekend together, Sam and Aiden draw closer and realize their all-consuming passion for each other masks deeper needs and desires.

When the storm ends, will they go their separate ways? Or will they find the courage to face the future together as one?

Angry Mobs and Founding Fathers: The Fight for Control of the American Revolution
by Michael E. Newton
Rating: 5.0 Stars
Genre: Non-Fiction/History
Price: $0.00 Save $13.95

Angry mobs launched the American Revolution when they protested against British acts of tyranny. These rebels threatened, harassed, and chased away British officials and Loyalists. The Founding Fathers agreed with the goals of these Patriots, but not with their methods. Fearing anarchy, the Founders channeled the passion of the mobs toward independence.

Working together, the angry mobs and Founding Fathers defeated the mighty British army and won independence, but the new nation that emerged was anarchic and chaotic, much like the angry mobs themselves. Meeting behind closed doors, the Founding Fathers conspired to depose the Confederation government, wrote a new constitution, and created the world’s most successful republic.

Like the other books in this series, the author is going to get real with you about her own struggle to lose weight and this does include a period of weight gain. She then takes you through a process that will help you to move on from your mistakes and get motivated to be back on track for changing your life.

This book, like the previous volumes, is a quick read told from a very real perspective.

I’ll Have The Soup And Salad
by Katherine Baldwin
Rating: 4.7 Stars
Genre: Cooking, Food & Wine
Price: $0.00 Save $2.99

When you envision the perfect bowl of steamy, delicious soup, what comes to mind? Is it the soup your mother or grandmother used to make from scratch using fresh vegetables and fresh beef or chicken simmered in a savory broth with just the right mixture of herbs and garlic? Maybe your dream soup is a thick, rich bowl of New England Clam Chowder. Or maybe it’s a nice can of condensed soup that you add a can of water to and Voila – you have your favorite soup. What? Scratch that last one because you won’t find any of that in this book. You will, however, find the first two.

You will find some of the classic soups like Chicken Noodle Soup, Southern Style Vegetable Soup, Cheddar Cheese and Potato Soup, Seafood Gumbo, Minestrone and many more. Some are fairly quick to make, but some take time. I do not apologize for that. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. Plan ahead and make the ones that take longer to prepare on the weekends. Most of these soups freeze beautifully, so it is the “cook once, serve three times” philosophy. You’ll thank me for that once you get the hang of it.

You will also find a nice selection of salad recipes and suggestions to round out your delicious soups and stews.

I agree with Charles. A military history book or two would be wonderful. There are so many to choose from!
