My Clockwork Muse (The Poe Files Mysteries)

Genre: Mystery

New York City, 1847: A madman is on the loose. Someone is committing murders in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe’s tales of terror. The police are stymied. When a corpse is found interred in a masonry wall in a subterranean chamber, they call on Poe himself to help solve the crime.

Edgar Allan Poe’s fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, has made the author famous as the master of deductive reasoning. But when “the father of the detective story” applies his powers of discovery to the “Poe Murders”, he finds that the clues lead in only one direction: to Poe himself.

Poe soon becomes the prime suspect, and he begins to doubt his own sanity as the evidence piles up against him. What of his somnambulistic trances that often find him at the graveside of his late wife, Virginia? Or the bizarre raven that visits him in his Fordham cottage? The strange mark on his neck? The odd behavior of his one-eyed cat, Pluto? And what of his doctor, Coppelius — he of the bulging pale blue eye — and his beautiful, other-worldly daughter, Olimpia? Nothing is as it seems.

When Jenna’s superhero boss The Machine gives her the opportunity to safeguard the changing crystal (a jewel that grants, changes or removes superpowers) she jumps at the chance, eager to do this so-called “cake” job and earn street cred with the Midwest League of Superheroes. To help her mission, the League assigns her a partner, the mysterious and super-sexy Vigilante. Too bad he’s also super-grouchy–what a tragic waste of hotness.

Soon, Jenna learns the threat to the changing crystal is all too real, and her list of trustworthy people grows shorter by the minute. But when she discovers something even more sinister afoot, involving Vigilante’s sexy arch nemesis Dementrix, it’ll take all her skills to keep the mad villainess from executing her plan to unmask and decommission the world’s superheroes…especially when Jenna accidentally becomes one herself.

What if these images and shadows were actually beings from another world bleeding into ours? What if there were humans that could see and interact with these beings? What would their days be like? What would their nights be like? Fearlings is a story of such a human.

Bought a Kindle Fire and I love it!!! It is easy to load with books and music and you can read in the dark.
Only wish it had a longer battery life. I read a lot and have
to keep charging it before the day is over.
Thanks for the free books, too.
