Moments after her birth to the mistress of a sprawling Virginia plantation, Lisbeth Wainwright is entrusted to Mattie, an enslaved wet nurse. From then on, Mattie serves as Lisbeth’s stand-in mother, nursing her, singing her to sleep, and soothing her in the night. And yet mothering Lisbeth tears Mattie away from her own baby, Samuel, who lives in the slave quarters. Growing up under Mattie’s tender care, Lisbeth adopts her traditions of prayer, singing, eating black-eyed peas, and hunting for yellow crocuses in the spring. As the years pass, Lisbeth is drawn back into the white world, earning a growing awareness of the inequality of her and Mattie’s stations. She struggles to reconcile her love for Mattie with her parents’ expectations for her future, intent on keeping the best of both worlds-until a terrible betrayal forces her to choose once and for all. Yellow Crocus is a compelling novel of love, loss, and redemption set during one of the most sinister chapters of American history.

Supers have existed for about twenty five years and H.E.R.O. – The Homeland Extraordinary Response Organization – allows for a loosely operated environment within which these heroic citizens can operate for the betterment of their communities without becoming vigilantes.

The common types of Supers manifest as Psychics, Blasters, Bricks or Mutants, although some crossover can occur in unusual individuals.

Psychics generally gain mental powers, such as telepathy, telekinesis, or emotional powers.
Blasters have the ability to generate or control an element or waveform, such as light, electricity, or heat.
Bricks are the strongmen of the world, having massive strength and armored bodies that can sustain immense damage.
Mutants appear less human in appearance due to the addition of blades, tentacles, fins, wings, tails, and other, even weirder, modifications to their bodies. They fall between a brick and the others in physical strength.

H.E.R.O. – Metamorphosis follows the story of three new Supers – Stephanie, Lance, and Rael. When a meteor shower unleashes radiation above Metrocity, these three friends are transformed into a psychic, a super-strong brick, and a mutant. In the midst of trying to become H.E.R.O. Agents while simultaneously working to cope with all of the challenges and problems their new powers are creating in their day to day lives, a mutant villain embarks on a mission to capture and kidnap as many new supers as she can in a bid to build a subversive army that could alter the structure of society forever.

After six years as a private investigator, Stacey Alexander has the strangest day of her life when she falls down a hollow tree and meets her new client, a nutty old dude with a crown who thinks he’s a king.

She’d climb right out of there, except that the crazy dude wants her to find his missing son, the Prince. And that is one hot-looking male. She’d be crazy herself not to take this case.

This short story is about 4700 words.

I’m disabled enough to not be able to work or drive so it leaves me kind of housebound. Reading is my escape, my adventures and my education. I learn something new with every book I read! I love American historical fiction and grab those particular books whenever I can. I can recommend one really good book I read recently (not historical) called “Half Past Midnight”. What an eye opener!! Thanks for giving this gift to all of us “midnight” readers!

Sandy, If you like Sci-Fi and fantasy, check out books by R.A. Sallvatore. He writes the dark elf books and the action will keep you reading for a while. Try the first one in the many he wrote. The Dark Elf Trilogy is first. The action will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Check out Clive Cussler. A friend gave me a copy of Raise the Titanic and I’ve read almost all of the “Dirk Pitt” novels. His other books are pretty good too if you like action/adventure novels. I hope this helps.
Feel better,
Jamie
