Anna Kagen seems to have it all: She’s young, beautiful, and married to a wealthy, prominent man.

But within the walls of her San Francisco mansion, she spends her time dodging her husband’s barbs and hunting down potential friends for her son, Jack, a 10-year-old on the autistic spectrum.

That old life suddenly seems idyllic when, on a school field trip, she makes the small error in judgment that sets in motion a chain of events that leads to another boy’s death. Suddenly Jack is a suspect, her husband’s career is in jeopardy, and Anna has to choose between loyalty to her son … and what may be her one chance at happiness.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

A lively, involving, fast-moving read, with characters one cares about, and about whom the reader can’t wait to find out what happens, all leavened (no pun intended!) by the author’s trademark wit and sass!

*******

Written in such a way that the reader becomes a part of the story, this is one book that will entertain and make you think about how a house can become a home again.

*******

A terrific story – gripping, well written, with characters one comes to root for (well, most of them). A tragic accident on a school-group outing, and its resolution, carries us through the book. Around it is the story of a woman’s growth, the struggles of parenting a son with Aspergers, a stressed marriage, and even a political campaign. Levin weaves these with confidence and dexterity.

*******

This is a touching story about a family living with autism plunged into a terrifying whirlwind when the young son, Jack, who has autism, is falsely accused of killing one of his classmates. The mystery and the mystery within the mystery unfolds briskly and finally, the true hero of the book is Jack, who proves that there is definitely more than one way to reach a destination.

*******

It’s a rich, full story with so much going on, and it’s crammed with Levin’s dry wit and dark humor. Her prose instantly paints a scene, or creates a living, breathing person. She’s brilliant at skewering the upper crust of SF society, and has a sharp eye for the story-beneath-the-story in local politics. This is a wild ride that feels at once contemporary and timeless.
