The past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past. –William Faulkner

Between mourning the recent loss of his wife and trying to raise his young son alone, librarian John Grant is barely surviving. And then he receives an anonymous letter promising a terrible revenge–retribution for a childhood sin John had thought long forgotten. The threat couldn’t be more cruel:

I will kill your precious son on his seventh birthday.

Now John’s only chance to save his son is to play the “game” his enemy has laid out for him. A game involving clues buried in literary fiction. Impossibly, these clues are planted in novels written centuries before John was even born.

But soon the line between fact and fiction begins to blur, and the trail of clues forces John into a confrontation with an unimaginable evil.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

Great storytelling, great characters, and a riveting plot. The central mystery was spellbinding. And I have to admit that I loved that this Dracula story wasn’t about vampires! This is truly a superior horror story, a thinking man or woman’s horror story.

The book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way though! It’s a gripping thriller with beautiful, literary passages. The story is told so well that I felt like I was right there with the main character as he was trying to save his son. I also loved how the Dracula legend slowly reveals itself during his journey. A great read!

As Stephen King says, I don’t have time for bad books when there are so many good ones just waiting to be read! Well, this is one for sure. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought the book, but I wasn’t disappointed. Technically sound, well played plot, interesting characters. Consider me a fan!

*******

This was the most compelling book I’ve read in a long time. Complex and beautifully written, and centered around a great main character. If you want to read a smart suspense novel, built on an imaginative concept, read this novel next!

*******

I loved this book! It was an old-fashioned horror story, the kind that feels like you’re on this realistic and scary journey with the main character. It was moody, dark, and full of suspense. Be warned, though: if you’re looking for another vampire book, this isn’t it. This story creates a new Dracula legend, but it does it with storytelling that harkens back to the classics. We’re going to read it in my book club!
