A Daughter’s Memoir of Adventure, Sailing, and Survival.

After her mother and father divorce at age seven, Leslie quickly learns the hard lessons of being Dad’s favorite. The abuse begins at age nine and doesn’t end until she begins to fight back, finally, at age fourteen.

Her father, a larger-than-life Norwegian, assumed full custody of Leslie and her two sisters and moved the family from their 63-acre rustic ranch in Northern California to a 45-foot sailboat in Southern California. The family spent two years living aboard their boat preparing for the trip of their father’s dreams: a trip around the world. On February 5, 1975, the family set sail for French Polynesia.

Intense and inspiring, Fourteen is a coming-of-age adventure story about a young girl who comes into her own power, fights back against abuse, becomes an accomplished sailor, and falls in love with the ocean and the natural world. The outer voyage is a mirror of her inner journey, and her goal is to find the strength to endure in a dangerous world, and within a difficult family.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

I devoured this book in two days, putting it down only when absolutely necessary. Leslie’s journey was completely captivating. I feared with her, ached with her, and grew with her with every turn of the page. Her connection to the sea was a tangible force in my mind. I highly recommend it!

What a remarkable story of adversity, adventure and survival. The writer fully captures her reader from the very beginning and you spend the book seeing, smelling and feeling exactly what she went through in her teenage years. My favorite parts of the book were when the girls get to experience island life interacting with native teenagers learning through friendship about the different cultures. I would highly suggest this book to anyone.

This book is a real page turner. A must read memoir, true story of a brave and spirited young girl and her two sisters coming of age, taken on an adventure of a lifetime by their father who had a dream of sailing around the world with his 3 daughters. I especially loved how she describes every turn of event with such candid, yet brilliant detail that kept me enthralled, on the edge of my seat with intrigue.

*******

A great book for book clubs because reading this book can result in many stimulating conversations, offering one an opening to sort through their own journey, especially those perplexing preteen and teen years. I highly recommend this book for not only a stimulating read but also as a catalyst for others to finally start to heal or continue to heal from their childhood experiences.

Leslie has the remarkable ability to paint a very vivid picture that allows the reader to feel like they are right there with her for the difficult circumstances and many triumphs that make up this moving story. The ocean and wind come alive and the book will certainly ignite your sense of adventure! Fourteen is a beautifully written and truly inspiring story that captures many emotions experienced by the human spirit.
