Alone in the darkness of an improvised cell, a kidnapped first-grader battles terror while his flashlight flickers, its batteries almost dead.

Across town, a teenager named Chris knocks on the door of his mother’s ex-boyfriend—then shoots the man dead. Before dawn, a second victim is discovered, surrounded by a gruesome scene. With few clues to make sense of his brutal crimes, attention turns to Chris’s odd obsession with the dark and violent heavy-metal band, Rehoboam.

Meanwhile, Rehoboam’s lead singer, Josh, thinks he may finally be ready to take the next step in his relationship with the band’s fiery female drummer. But when news of Chris’s crime spree triggers flashbacks of a harsh, fundamentalist upbringing, Josh finds his career and his romance unexpectedly interrupted. Linked to the widening criminal investigation, Josh must eventually choose between clearing his name and keeping the secrets of his past.

Here’s what the reviewers have to say:

M. Dolon Hickmon’s first novel is a stunning accomplishment–both fast paced and thematically rich, both a tense thriller and a portrait of multiple characters’ inner lives.

Masterful depiction of a darkness in humanity. Mr. Hickmon takes you to a place you don’t want to go. Child abuse is not a subject we are normally drawn to. He has done us a great service to shine a light on it, and he does so with great skill. Lastly, not like any other “crime thriller” that comes to mind. Would make quite the movie.

The story goes back and forward it time flawlessly, with changes in location and pace which keep you reading right to the end. The connections between the players is complex but the conclusion ties up all the ends. This book is very emotive and shows fear, damage, and revenge in the lives of those abused and coping strategies used by children. Although this story is not for the faint hearted, it is a thoughtful and well put together book.

Sometimes, reviews are hard to write. It doesn’t matter how much you like a book, it can be difficult to effectively express how a book made you feel. This is one of those books. I’m glad I took a chance and read this book. I enjoyed it and I’m sure the story will stick with me for some time.

I felt the way Hickmon wove the story in an emphatic, rhythmic, and suspenseful fashion gave rise to the crescendo ending. This book is groundbreaking in many ways, including addressing society-accepted violence in the immediate family. I honestly and highly suggest the book.
